There are only four different areas to colour plan:
Water
Shadows from the sky above
Darker shadows
Land
Thickening along parts of the water's edge are hooked in C. Birds are hooked in B. In C and D, Ted Rowan used a combination of three colours and hooked the areas hit and mix to give a textured look. D was hookeed in vertical lines.
Any combination of colours may be used. The original hooked piece used pale blue for the very light areas (A). Greenish blue for the medium shaded areas (B). A combination of dark blue, dark green and bright green for the dark areas (C). The land which looks checkered in the photo is hooked in vertical lines, hit and mix in medium green, light green and greenish gray (D). Now, remember that this design was hooked several years ago and as we become familiar with textured wool, we now might easily find a suitable fabric in a check or herringbone fabric.
